Sola Scriptura and True Revelation
In this episode we discuss Sola Scriptura, showing that only God’s Word is authoritative and binding on the church. Though the major Christological creeds are correct, they are correct because the doctrine can be found in Scripture. We are all called to search God’s Word and judge doctrine accordingly. The Roman Catholic Church in Luther’s day claimed that they alone spoke for God and that all Christians had to listen to them.
We go on to discuss the use of “revelation” 1Corinthians 14:29-31. We show that this was not receiving new revelations from God; it was bringing forth implications and applications from Scripture. Those implications and applications were to be judged by others. Gospel implications give us hope and joy; spontaneous subjective utterances confuse the flock.
