This program begins with a discussion of the practice called “centering prayer” by Enneagram teacher Christopher Heuertz. He claims that this type of prayer is “non-conceptual.” This is part of the program of silence, solitude and stillness that he prescribes. Seeking to silence the mind is problematic and even Heuertz describes it as difficult and needing much practice. He appeals to church history to validate his claims. We explain that scripture alone is normative, not anything that might have been done in church history and called “Christian.” Many evils happened in church history and we have to determine what is normative from Scripture alone. We explain that prayer is relational, not mechanical. In Christ, we go to God who loves us and hears us; we do not silence the mind as part of a journey inward to find the “True Self.” Christian prayer does not require mastering difficult techniques. We come to God by faith according to His promises in Christ. Mystical prayer teachings have many inherent absurdities which we point out. These false teachings on prayer are numerous, pernicious, and lead people away from the true God of the Bible. We point out listeners to true means of grace revealed in the Bible.
