In his book "Practicing the Way" John Mark Comer claims that we can "do as Jesus did." Bob DeWaay shows that to "do as He did" assumes that you have to "be who He is." We cannot do what Jesus did because He is completely unique as the second member of the Trinity, fully God and fully man. Only Jesus has "all authority in heaven and on earth," as we find in the Great Commission in Matthew 28. We are called to do what He commanded, not to do what He did.
Bob and Barb go on to discuss the communicable and incommunicable attributes of God. We must distinguish between the communicable attributes of God, such as the fruits of the Spirit, and the incommunicable attributes that are unique to God.
This is a critique of Practicing the Way by John Mark Comer, WaterBrook, 2024.
