One of the greatest theological controversies between Eastern and Western Christianity has revolved around the doctrine of the filioque. The filioque is a theological term that refers to the phrase, "and the Son" in Latin, which was added to the Nicene Creed in 1014, stating that the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son. This addition is considered by many in the Eastern Orthodox Church to be the greatest point of contention between Eastern and Western Christianity, for the Eastern Orthodox Church rejects the filioque, believing the Holy Spirit proceeds only from the Father, and believes that anyone who thinks otherwise is heretical.
